Since the introduction of emission standards in 2007, technicians have seen new systems and technology being added to trucks to comply with these standards. This class will start with the importance of these standards and the chemical makeup of diesel exhaust. Afterward, we’ll walk you through each system’s components and how they operate and teach you tests that you can perform to diagnose issues within the aftertreatment and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems. This class teaches these concepts with text, images, diagrams, animations, and quizzes. After you finish all the labs and quizzes and score a 70% or higher on your first try, you’ll receive a certificate of completion.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the components of a diesel engine exhaust and aftertreatment system and explain their operation.
- Explain the differences between active (service) and passive regeneration.
- Explain how temperature sensors are used to monitor component operation.
- Explain the function of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) in the selective catalyst reduction (SCR) system.
Intended Audience
This course is geared for technicians who work on heavy-duty and medium-duty diesel trucks. However, the principles can be applied to other diesel engines.
