Vehicles and equipment continue to get more complex with the addition of new control modules to keep up with emissions standards, safety, and creature comforts. Many of these modules require multiple data-linking systems within the vehicle’s electrical systems. The addition of CAN-based J1939 systems in the early 2000s made newer vehicles’ electrical systems more complex and integrated bringing along a brand new way of diagnosing electrical problems. The methods you used to use to test these circuits no longer work due to the digital nature of multiplexing. Our ASE and OEM certified Diesel Technician trainers will teach you the skills and give you the knowledge to diagnose these systems quickly and efficiently.

Scott Meek teaching

Datalink Overview and Diagnostics

The digital nature of J1939 and CAN systems can be difficult for technicians to grasp. This class will help you gain the skills and abilities needed to diagnose modern, electronic Datalink systems efficiently and accurately. The class will be made up of both lecture and hands-on, lab portions covering everything from why datalink systems are necessary to how to diagnose problems within them.

See All Topics

Topics Covered:

  • Vocabulary associated with datalink systems (datalink, multiplexing, J1939, CAN, etc.) and how the differences between them
  • Identifying and diagnosing different datalink systems
  • Why multiplexing is used on today’s vehicles for module communication
  • Diagnostic connector types (6-pin, 9-pin, OBDII) and the associated diagnostic protocols
  • Difference between public and private datalinks
  • CAN topology and diagnostics of CAN systems
  • 250k vs. 500k systems (black vs. green 9-pin connector) and what that means when diagnosing
  • Common issues with datalink systems and how to quickly find them
  • Setting source addresses so modules communicate correctly
  • How to use an oscilloscope to aide in CAN system diagnostics
Student learning

Hands-on Training

To help reinforce the concepts learned in this course, you’ll practice diagnosing J1939 and J1708 datalink issues on both test equipment and live vehicles. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of completion as well as reference material for further self-study.

Become the Top Technician

The knowledge gained from this course will allow you to diagnose vehicles all across the board since J1939/J1708 systems aren’t specific to any one manufacturer. But the best part about learning to diagnose J1939 systems is that it’s based on CAN topology which is found in other industries including automotive, marine, and even industrial machines. You’ll leave this class with skills that will propel you to the top of your career!

Reduce Vehicle Comebacks

Have you had technicians replace expensive control modules only to find out the problem ended up being a broken datalink wire or bad network resistor? This class will help your technicians become more efficient, giving them the skills to diagnose vehicles quickly and efficiently. This will result in less time wasted on incorrect diagnostics, incorrect repairs, and fewer vehicle comebacks leading you to save time and money and increase repeat customers.

Please Note - This class will be held at the NEW Diesel Laptops Training Center in Arlington, TX (map below).
