Dive deep into the evolution of Cummins B/C/L & X model Aftertreatment Emission Systems with Kevin Vieth from VieTech. In this 4-hour virtual classroom session, Vieth will teach you all about the operation, control strategies, and diagnostic procedures from 2004 through 2017. This class is ideal for both diesel technicians and heavy-equipment technicians and other technical support staff. Please note, the registered student will receive their virtual workbook via email one week prior to class. Please provide a valid email address for the delivery of the virtual workbook upon order placement.

Course Overview

This virtual classroom training will focus on EPA Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine emissions regulations and the technology Cummins uses to meet these requirements. The content of this class will directly relate to the developments, product changes, troubleshooting, and service procedures surrounding current Cummins diesel aftertreatment emission control systems.

See Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives:

    • Timeline of emission regulations and implementation of Cummins emission control technology
    • Cummins Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Systems Overview
    • In-depth understanding of system sensors/components, theory and operation of:
      • Cummins EPA 2007 & 2010 Aftertreatment & Emission Control Technology
        • Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)
        • Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
        • SCR & Bosch Airless DEF System Catalyst
      • EPA 2013
        • HD OBD & Fault Troubleshooting Logic Overview
      • EPA/GHG 2017
        • Cummins Single Module Aftertreatment System
        • Cummins UL2 DEF Dosing System
      • Understanding of Cummins maintenance, troubleshooting techniques, and diagnostic tests
      • Proper identification of EPA standard, emissions technology, and control system based on Cummins engine model and year

Regeneration System Operation and Diagnostics:

      • Engine controls that regulate the DOC inlet temperature during regeneration
      • How to spot low temperature issues during regeneration
      • How to clean DPFs and DOCs and inspect them for replacement when removed

SCR System Operation and Diagnostics:

      • What diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is and the importance of verifying concentration with a refractometer
      • DEF system operations including pumps, tanks, lines, tank and line heaters, decomp tube, and dosers
      • Particulate matter sensor function and operation
      • How to address aftertreatment and SCR derates, including what they mean and how certain manufacturers require you to clear them.

Actuators Affecting Aftertreatment:

    • Turbocharger and related components (How low boost can cause regeneration issues)
    • EGR valve and related components (How EGR function can cause regeneration issues)
    • Fuel systems and related components (How fuel-related issues can cause regeneration issues)
    • How low power, oil consumption, smoke, and cylinder performance affect aftertreatment

Requirements

Each student attending the virtual training must access the virtual classroom environment individually using a computer or tablet with Internet access and Chrome or Firefox installed. Additionally, students must have a microphone, a webcam, a pen, and the course workbook which is supplied after registration.

Schedule

Students are asked to arrive 15-20 minutes prior to class start. Upon entry into the virtual classroom, students will be issued a pre-exam while awaiting the arrival and settling of the remaining students.
